Assessment Option:  Testing

The WV homeschooling law, 18-8-1 requires that an assessment for each home educated child be submitted to the county by June 30 of each homeschooling year.  That assessment can be
  • a nationally normed standardized achievement test, or
  • the testing program currently in use in the WV public schools and administered in a public school, or
  • a written narrative prepared by a certified teacher, or
  • an alternative assessment agreed to by the county superintendent.

For those families who choose assessment option #1 above, CHEWV offers the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (elementary through junior high levels) and the Iowa Test of Educational Development (high school level) each year as a service to our members.

Specific information and registration materials for each year are printed in the winter issue of CHEWV’s newsletter, The Homeschool Banner, mailed to our members near the beginning of December.  Updated information is also uploaded to this website late in each calendar year for testing the following March. The deadline to register for CHEWV testing is usually the latter part of January, and the testing window for administration begins in early March.  We encourage you to join CHEWV now so that you will receive annual Banner testing information by mail, allowing you to register in a timely manner.
